Defining the perfect face is subjective; however, when asked, many patients and professionals tend to agree on one aspect of the facial aesthetic: having a balanced facial structure is essential. For many people, a lack of definition in one or more areas of the face can have a significant impact on their overall appearance, self-esteem, and confidence.

Luckily, it is possible to address a lack of definition on the face through facial implants. While chin and cheek implants are the most common types of implant requested for balancing out facial appearances, there are other implant locations, such as jaw angle (around the jawline) and paranasal (between the nose and upper lip), that offer solid options for augmenting specific parts of the facial structure.

Types of Implants

Chin Implant

This is one of the most common techniques used to address jawlines with a lack of definition and shape. The incision is made inside the mouth, which leaves behind no visible scarring. By inserting an implant into specific parts of the jaw, a more aesthetically pleasing outline can be created. Whether you hope to better define the line between your jaw and neck or you want a more angled or softened chin, this technique is an effective option to achieve your goals.

Cheek Implant

Similar to the chin implant, the incision for this procedure is made on the inside of the mouth to hide scarring. Implants are placed at specific points of the cheek to highlight contours throughout the face. By highlighting these contours, a more balanced facial appearance can be achieved.

Jaw Angle Implants

A well-defined jaw is one of the most sought-after attributes in modern beauty aesthetics. Luckily, these implants can be placed along the edge of the jawline. They can be used in combination with one another to produce radical results, or they can be used individually to highlight specific areas throughout the jaw. This method also uses incisions inside the mouth to hide scarring.

Paranasal Implant

This technique utilizes the same incision inside the mouth; however, the implant is inserted between the nose and upper lip to solve balance issues in the upper jaw area. The implant is specially designed for this procedure and is most often needed to increase the anterior projection of the upper jaw.

After the Procedure

Once swelling and redness from the procedure have subsided (this should take a few weeks), your final results will become noticeable. It is important to have reasonable expectations going into the surgery to ensure that you are happy and comfortable with your final results. These procedures are typically performed on an outpatient basis in a hospital, surgeon’s office, or a surgical center with local or general anesthesia.

Tom Hardy, Jamie Dornan, Anthony Joshua, Ryan Gosling, and Idris Elba: besides being named the top five Sexiest Men of the Year for 2018 by Glamour Magazine, the superstars in this lineup all have one other characteristic in common: a strong, well-defined jawline.

This trait is one of the most coveted symbols of male beauty according to today’s aesthetic standards. In fact, you would be hard-pressed to find a single individual on the list of 100 sexiest men who did not have an obvious strong jaw structure (other than Jason Momoa; no one can tell what is going on beneath that beard). Unfortunately, the vast majority of men are not born with the jaws of James Franco or Will Smith. For those of us who were not gifted with the bone structure of a demigod, there is still hope by way of genioplasty (chin surgery).

What Is Genioplasty?

Genioplasty is a plastic surgery procedure that corrects a weakly defined jawline by surgically fragmenting the jaw bone to manually extend the chin outward. By holding the chin in its new position with plates and screws, a significant change in the facial bone structure can be observed. Since the incisions are all made inside the mouth, there is also no visible scarring that results from this procedure.

Will I Be Out of Work Long?

There will be some downtime as a result of the procedure, but most patients can return to work within a couple of weeks following the surgery. During this time, you may experience some minor pain and discomfort, but prescription medication will help to mitigate those symptoms. It is also likely that you will be prescribed antibiotics to prevent any infections from developing.

How Will This Affect My Diet?

Long term, this procedure will have no effect on your diet. Depending on the nature of your surgery, you may be placed on a liquid-only diet until your mouth has completely healed. This is to prevent you from running the risk of rupturing the sutures. If you are put on a liquid diet, it is best to slowly graduate to more solid options to ensure the integrity of the healing process.
